Silhouette Blinds? No, Silhouette® Sheer Shades

Hunter Douglas window treatments have interesting names, but sometimes, folks don't get them right. The most common misconception is using the terms "blinds" and "shades" interchangeably. As our In the Shade team members tell clients, those words refer to two distinctly different window-covering categories.

Case in point: It's common for customers to come into our showroom asking for Silhouette Blinds. What do they really want? Silhouette® Sheer Shades. That latter name offers a better description, but we get it. The confusion often stems from the visual similarity between Silhouette® Shades and other horizontal window coverings.

What Exactly Are Hunter Douglas Silhouette® Shades?

Silhouette® Sheer Shades feature soft, S-shaped fabric vanes suspended between two sheer panels, creating a unique floating appearance and a radiant glow. Rather than horizontal blinds made from aluminum, wood, or faux wood, Silhouette® Sheer Shades take a different approach. You get the softness of UV-protective, sheer fabrics, plus the light control capabilities people associate with blinds. The fabric selection is also impressive: over 150+ choices.

The rear sheer filters daytime light; you have privacy even when the vanes are open. To adjust both, tilt the vanes to different angles. Silhouette® shades come with 2", 3", or 4" vanes, and we customize them in 2" to 136" heights and 6" to 144" widths.

Using Silhouette® Sheer Shades in Your Home

Silhouette® Sheer Shades from Hunter Douglas are more versatile than standard sheers and a fine alternative to heavy drapes. Their visual lightness integrates well with contemporary design styles, and the subtle presence doesn't overwhelm other design elements. Statement furniture pieces or architectural features can remain focal points, with Silhouette® Sheer Shades' clean lines in the background.

We recommend these horizontal shades for living rooms, dining rooms, and family rooms, but they work in other areas that benefit from softened sunlight. For bedrooms and other spaces that require added light control, ask us about Silhouette® Duolite® Shades. Those include an independently operated roller shade behind the back for added light and privacy control.

Other enhancements include:

  • Alustra® Collection of Silhouette®: Exclusive design-inspired fabrics, textures, colors and hardware.
  • Silhouette® Halo™ Shadings: Even more flexible vanes that allow added light control.
  • Silhouette® ClearView® Shadings: For optimum outdoor views.
  • SoftTouch®: A battery-powered wand system for streamlined touch-and-go functionality.
  • PowerView® Automation: A motorized window treatment system that works with the PowerView® app, the Pebble® Remote, and smart-home systems.
